How Reuse Minnesota is funded

At Reuse Minnesota, we believe in transparency in all aspects of our work, including how we are funded. The following is a breakdown of the grants, donations, memberships, and other funding that sustain our mission.

2025 funding sources

Grants

While our grant funders change from year to year, Reuse Minnesota has been primarily funded by state and county grants. We work to secure grants that fund our mission-based programming throughout the state.

  • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
    • Environmental Assistance grant (ended June 2025)
    • Waste Reduction and Reuse grant (through June 2027)
  • Hennepin County
    • Green Partners grant (ended August 2025)
  • Parker Foundation
  • Upstream

Memberships

Our membership includes organizations (for profit businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions) and individuals. The number of active members varies at any given time, but we typically have around 110 organizational members and 40-50 individual members who support our work through annual dues. Explore our directory to learn more.

Conference

Our conference generates important income for our work. While the event takes places in the fall, sponsorships received in the spring and summer cover upfront staff costs for planning the event. They also help provide honorariums for speakers and pay for accessibility services. We set our registration rate at a level to keep it affordable for attendees, while covering food and venue expenses.

  • Sponsorships
    • Advocate level: Ramsey/Washington R&E, Hennepin County, Minnesota Waste Wise
    • Partner level: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Eureka Recycling
    • Supporter level: Brave North Technology, Bridging, HDR, University of Minnesota Waste Recovery Services
    • Social Hour level: Agent of Change, PaintCare, Resource Renew
  • Registration
  • Exhibitors

Donations

Donations have been a smaller portion of our income historically, however, we are constantly working to grow this part of our funding. Individual and corporate contributions provide important unrestricted funds for expenses not often covered by grants including insurance and technology (website and member data management system, phones, Zoom and MailChimp subscriptions).

Individual

    • Fundraising events
    • One-time and recurring donations

Corporate

    • Various musical artists through REVERB
    • Wedge Change Matters funds

Contracts

Contracts for services provided is another way we generate revenue. We have previously run fix-it clinics for Dakota County and our staff have been paid guest speakers for various organizations. If your organization would like to hire Reuse Minnesota, we would love to hear from you. Please email info@reusemn.org or contact our staff directly.

  • Hennepin County - Swap-It contract (through mid-2027)

Reuse Minnesota was founded in 2012 and is a member-based nonprofit that supports repair, resale, and rental businesses, bringing visibility to the reuse sector as a means to lower our state's impact on the environment.
